The Shell House, Southbourne
External refurbishment
The Shellhouse, 137 Southbourne Overcliff Drive, Southbourne – External Decoration & Cleaning – September 2018 – October 2018.
Hallmark regularly carry out maintenance and decoration works for a number of block management companies in the Bournemouth area, normally under the Section 20 tendering procedure.
Hallmark were contacted by Napier Management Services in April 2018 who requested that we provide quotations for the redecoration of the Shellhouse. This is a prominent block of modern apartments which had been constructed on the site of the famous landmark that had featured so many shells collected from all over the world. The new block had been built approx. 15 years ago and boasts an impressive curved set of balconies with unimpeded views of the coast from the Needles on the Isle of Wight right along to Old Harry Rocks.
Hallmark were successful in obtaining the works which involved the cleaning of all upvc roofline and window frames, together with the decoration of the original Monocouche render and metal balcony railings. The render was in particularly poor condition as often occurs with this substrate after many years in such a harsh coastal environment. The Akzo Nobel Technical Manager had specified their ‘Maximum Exposure’ grade of Dulux Weathershield masonry paint which is ideal for this situation. In some areas, five full coats were applied in order to achieve the opacity and protection required.
High level access was safely achieved by means of a combination of cherrypicker, mobile and fixed scaffolding. A number of other repairs were undertaken as works proceeded at the request of the block directors who were very pleased with the finished product.
